We aim to regularly bring you information about what's happening at Thornhill Hall Farm whether that's on the farm or at Clever Cow Organics.
Clever Cow Organics Spring Update.
The Spring calving period is now in full swing, around 100 cows have calved in February and March with a pleasing amount of heifers calves born. By the middle of April the baby calves will be out at grass drinking milk out of the mobile feeder in groups of 35, it is one of the highlights of the farming year to see them charging around the paddock.
The cows have been out during the day since February, and by early April will be at grass night and day working round each paddock every thirty days. This is aided by the 5000 concrete railway sleepers and disused railway cuttings allowing the cows to reach all the fields without damaging the grass.
We have recently taken on another organic farm where we will rear our young stock and grow crops to feed to the cows in the winter months, the total farm size is now 740 acres or 300 hectares. Having planted 66 acres of winter wheat last Autumn we have now planted 21 acres of triticale and 21 acres of beans.
The average age of the farm team is now 25, consisting of myself and share milker Andrew being 30, our assistant herdman Mike is 22 and tractor man/stockman, Tom is 16. We really are bucking the trend of the dairy industry and it gives me great satisfaction to see a young team develop and gel together.
